Hermetic sliding door for operating rooms: a technical guide to choosing

Hermetic sliding door for operating rooms: technical guide

Massimiliano Fricano · 05-10-2026

How to choose a hermetic sliding door for an operating room: airtightness, hygiene, UNI EN 16005 automation and options to plan at design stage.

In an operating room, the door is not a simple passage. It is part of the system that maintains air pressure and cleanliness. A poorly chosen door causes a loss of overpressure, forces the ventilation system to work harder and puts the room's contamination class at risk.

In this guide we look at the five aspects to assess when designing or buying a hermetic sliding door for an operating suite.

1. Why hermetic sealing is essential

Operating rooms work under overpressure compared with nearby areas: clean air flows out, contaminated air does not get in. Any gap around the door is a leak. That is why the door must close airtight on all four sides, floor included.

A hermetic sliding door achieves this with a two-stage movement: first it slides parallel to the wall, then at the end of its travel it runs down the ramps in the track beam, lowering and moving towards the wall to compress the perimeter seal. At the bottom, as it lowers, the leaf presses the bottom seal onto the floor and closes the last gap.

2. Hygiene and cleanability

In the operating room everything must be able to be disinfected every day. The door must have:

  • smooth, continuous surfaces, with no visible screws or joints;
  • materials resistant to disinfectants, such as stainless steel or HPL laminate;
  • seals that do not trap dirt and are easy to replace;
  • touch-free opening, with elbow, foot or touchless sensor.

3. Automation and safety

Automatic pedestrian doors must comply with UNI EN 16005, which governs safety devices against impacts and crushing. In an operating suite, specific functions are also needed:

  • partial opening, to reduce air loss when staff pass through;
  • interlock with other doors, to create a filter zone;
  • manual opening in the event of a power failure;
  • connection to the "room occupied" signal.

4. Dimensions and clear passage

The clear width must allow the passage of beds, stretchers and equipment. At design stage it is worth checking the actual clear passage (not just the size of the wall opening) and the side space needed for the leaf to slide.

5. Options to plan from the start

Some choices must be made at design stage, because later they cost more:

  • flush-glazed vision panel, to see into the room without opening the door;
  • lead shielding, if radiological equipment is used in the room (for example in hybrid rooms);
  • colour and finish matched to the room walls;
  • provision for access control.

Common mistakes

Many problems arise on site, not in the door:

  • walls out of square, which prevent the leaf from bearing evenly on the seal;
  • floor not level under the bottom seal, which leaves a gap;
  • wall opening built without allowing for the frame and the space taken up by the header box;
  • insufficient side space for the leaf to slide;
  • missing electrical provisions for automation, push buttons and signals.

A technical site survey before installation avoids most of these mistakes.
