Lead-lined X-ray doors

Lead-lined X-ray doors for radiology and CT

Radiation stays out, people stay safe. Lead shielding for radiology, CT and hybrid rooms. Sliding or hinged, with the thickness required by the medical physicist for each room.

How it is made

Designed as part of the room's shielding plan.

01

Based on the medical physicist's design

Each door is configured to the shielding value specified for the room and integrates into the overall design.

02

Sized for the weight

Hinges and sliding systems carry the extra weight of the lead-lined leaf, for smooth movement over time.

03

HPL finish

HPL laminate cladding in the catalogue finishes, hygienic and matched to the rest of the ward.

Where they are needed

In every room with ionising radiation.

In a radiology room a lead-lined door is not just a door: it is part of the protective barrier, like the shielded walls and ceiling. If the door does not give the same protection as the wall, the whole room shielding is compromised.

mm Pb

The thickness comes from the calculation, not the catalogue

Protection is expressed in millimetres of lead equivalent. The value is set by the radiation protection expert through the shielding calculation required by Italian Legislative Decree 101/2020, based on equipment, workload, distance from the source and use of adjacent rooms. Two rooms in the same department may need different doors.

Continuity

Shielded over the whole surface

The door must have at least the same lead equivalent as the wall: leaf, frame, overlaps and closing edges. In our doors the lead sheet continues into the overlap between panel and profile, and we recommend running the lead along the wall reveal too, as shown in detail C of the datasheet.

Weight

Sized for the real lead-lined leaf

A shielded leaf weighs much more than a standard door. Reinforced three-wing hinges, carriages, tracks and operators are sized for the actual weight, for smooth movement over time.

Sliding or hinged lead-lined door?

Sliding RXHinged RX
SpaceNo swing space in the room or corridor; needs a free wall on one sideNeeds space for the leaf swing
Stretchers and bedsIdeal with wide openings and frequent trafficSuitable, single or double leaf
AutomationVery common, simplifies ward flowsPossible with a swing door operator
Leaf weightCarriages and track carry even very heavy leavesHinges and frame sized for the lead weight
Typical useCT rooms, angiography, hybrid rooms, high-traffic radiologyDiagnostic rooms, technical rooms, clinics

When sealing is needed too

In hybrid rooms, operating theatres with intraoperative imaging, angiography rooms with strict asepsis and nuclear medicine rooms, the door must combine the lead equivalent required by the calculation and the sealing required by the HVAC design. For these rooms there is the sealed RX version with the HOSPITAL60 profile.

Mistakes to avoid in specifications

  • Writing "lead-lined door" without the mm Pb value.
  • Shielding only the leaf, not frame, overlaps and vision panels.
  • Ignoring the weight when sizing operators and hinges.
  • Forgetting sealing in hybrid rooms.
  • Not planning "X-ray in use" signs and interlocks with the electrician.

Continuous shielding

The lead must be continuous, not only in the leaf.

A lead-lined sliding door really protects only if the shielding does not break at the joints: along the leaf profiles and at the edge of the wall opening. That is where X-rays find their way into the corridor.

Overlap in the profileIn our X-ray doors the lead sheet continues inside the aluminium profile and overlaps the panel's lead.
Lead in the wall openingWe recommend running the lead along the depth of the opening as well, as in detail C of the data sheet.

Illustrative animation, not to scale: yellow is the lead, red are rays reaching the corridor.

Rays past the door: 0

The lead thickness (mm Pb) is set by the radiation protection expert's calculation; continuity at the joints is down to the door.
